Jefferson Curl

The Jefferson Curl is a Mobility exercise in the sense that it may be used as a strength and stretching technique for the posterior chain.

Involved Muscles

Procedure

Starting Position:

  • Patient stands upright on a raised platform or bench, typically with both feet shoulder-width or closer

  • A resistance weight (plate or DB) is grasped in both hands

The Jefferson Curl is then performed by slowly lowering the weight towards the ground by flexing one vertebral segment at a time, in descending order from the Atlanto-Occiptal Joints . The Vertebral Column is progressively flexed, emphasising intersegmental movement until the weight can no-longer be lowered without compensating. The concentric portion of the Jefferson Curl reverses the movement by extending the Vertebral Column , this time starting at the most inferior segment ( Lumbosacral Junction ).

Cluster

Regression

The following techniques may be used as a regression if the Jefferson Curl exceeds the capacity of the patient:

Progression

The Jefferson Curl is a final stage progression as it emphasises maximal flexion of the Vertebral Column under load.
