In terms of range of motion and functional pattern recruitment, the Swimmers Oblique Extensions are a moderate-to-advanced core exercise that places emphasis on the Abdominal Obliques and a stretch on the entire Lateral Line . The split stance places the contralateral Adductors in a favourable position to act which additionally makes the exercise suitable for early-to-mid phases of Anterior Sling development. This exercise is involves an eccentric and concentric Muscle Contraction .
Starting Position:
Patient is side-facing in a Back Extension machine so that their proximal leg is behind the other and both are pressed into the machines posterior ankle support. The superior hand holds a dumbbell, with that arm in full GH Joint - Abduction so that the shoulder touches the ear
The patient braces their midsection and performs lateral flexion of the Vertebral Column ( Lumbar - Lateral Flexion ). Contraction of the Abdominal Obliques is used to control the eccentric decline and concentric incline of the movement.
The following Strength exercises may be used as a regression if the Swimmers Oblique Extensions exceed the capacity of the patient:
The following strength exercises may be used as a progression once the patient achieves proficiency with the Swimmers Oblique Extensions:
