The Pallof Press is an anti-rotational exercise used to develop stability and coordination through the Core . This exercise may be relevant in the early-phase of pathologies such as Instability of the Vertebral Column , Disc Herniation and Rotator Cuff Tear / Tendinopathy , as well as for improving sports performance and injury prevention.
Starting Position
Patient is kneeling perpendicularly to a fixed band so that the outside leg is in front of the torso while the inside leg falls behind
Both hands grasp the band as it is pulled taut until it is centred at the torso and elbows fixed by their respective sides
The Pallof Press is then performed through a Horizontal Push with both hands until arms are straight. Tension through the band should be sufficient enough to challenge the mid-section without compromising an upright good posture of the torso.
Floating Knee - the rear foot/ inside leg hovers immediately above the ground which removes a point of contact. This substantially increases the demand for lateral stability and consequently activity in muscles such as the Gluteus Medius and Core
Rotations - rather than pressing the band straight out in front of the torso, The Elbows remain fixed to the side and the rotational movement is produced by the trunk. This emphasises both anti-rotation and rotation mechanisms
Overhead Pallof Press - from same starting position, band is pressed overhead until arms are straight. This maintains anti-rotation effort while adding significant anti-extension force and large overhead range
The following exercises can be used as a regression if Pallof Press exceed the capacity of the patient:
Isometric Chest Squeezes - isometric exercise that isolates Chest
Banded Russian Holds - isometric low resistance anti-rotation Core exercise
Deadbugs - bodyweight isotonic exercise that cues appropriate core/ spinal engagement while lengthening Hip - Flexion / Thoracic - Extension
Side Plank - partial bodyweight isometric anti-lateral flexion exercise
Bird-Dog - bodyweight isotonic exercise that emphasises Posterior Sling / Core
Single Arm Farmers Carry - unilateral carry that loads the arm
The following exercises can be used as a progression to Pallof Press once exercise proficiency is achieved:
Copenhagen - bodyweight isometric exercise that emphasises Anterior Sling
Farmers Carry - whole body exercise that emphasises core/ anti-rotation
Dual KB Russian Twist - Russian Twist variation that typically utilises greater load and better emphasises Thoracic - Extension
Half DB Bench Press - unilateral isotonic horizontal pressing motion that emphasises the Anterior Sling
Bird-Dog Row - One Arm Row variation that emphasises Posterior Sling
