Shoulder Dislocates, orShoulder Pass-Throughs, are an advanced Stretching / Mobility exercise that embraces the greatest circumduction range of The Shoulder Girdle possible. This primarily stretches the anterior tissues which limit GH Joint - Extension and GH Joint - External Rotation . Restoring length in the involved structures may be relevant in the treatment of pathologies such as Adhesive Capsulitis and Subacromial Impingement or following immobilisation or surgical intervention.
Anterior Glenohumeral Joint Capsule
Starting Position:
Patient stands upright grasping a dowel/ pole horizontally with both hands in front of their torso with both arms straightened
The closer the hands are placed, the more intense the stretch
Shoulder Dislocates are then performed by raising the bar overhead and then continuing this trajectory behind the torso until the bar rests on the lower back/ Gluteal’s region.
Banded - affords a variable resistance, allowing those with specific mobility limitations to perform the movement safely
Weighted - a weight plate may be added to the middle of a pole or band for extra resistance
The Shoulder Dislocates may be regressed if the intensity or position exceeds that of the patient:
Forward Elevation Stretch - rudimentary passive stretch with moderate GH Joint - Flexion range
Dowel External Rotation Stretch - self-guided GH Joint - External Rotation stretch with overpressure
Door Frame Shoulder Stretch - self-guided anterior shoulder stretch with large Horizontal GH Joint - Abduction range
Split Stance Biceps Stretch - self-guided anteiror shoulder stretch with large GH Joint - Extension range
The Shoulder Dislocates may be progressed once proficiency is achieved:
Wheel Pose - full bridge variation that lengthens entire anterior chain
Jefferson Curl - maximal stretch for posterior chain with emphasis on intersegmental movment of the Vertebral Column and capacity to add load
Dead Hangs - whole body traction for Pull and Push muscles with large overhead range
